P alaces have always told stories about the nations that build them. At Qasr Al Watan, that story is written not only in soaring domes, intricate geometry, and extraordinary craftsmanship, but in books and manuscripts, diplomatic gifts, traditions of hospitality, and the spaces in which the business of a nation takes place. There is grandeur here on an astonishing scale. Yet look beyond the monumental architecture and another story begins to emerge. Qasr Al Watan – literally, the Palace of the Nation – is as much concerned with ideas as it is with ceremony. Knowledge, collaboration, diplo- macy, cultural exchange, and the preservation of intellectual heritage all have a place within its walls. This is no historic palace preserved as a monument to a vanished age. Qasr Al Watan remains part of the Presidential Palace complex, associated with the functions of government and the reception of international leaders. Its opening to the public in 2019 therefore offered something unusual: access not simply to a remarkable building, but to an expression of how the UAE understands its own identity. Architecture with meaning Qasr Al Watan’s pale stone exterior appears almost luminous be- neath the Abu Dhabi sun, its domes, arches, and ordered symmetry establishing a visual language rooted in Arabian architectural tradi- tions. Yet this is not an exercise in recreating a palace from another age. Traditional forms and principles have instead been translated into a contemporary expression of national identity. Nowhere is this clearer than in the Great Hall. At the heart of the palace, the space rises towards a central dome 60 metres high and 37 metres in diameter. Beneath it, symmetry establishes a sense of bal- ance and order, while mosaics, marble, mirrored surfaces, archways, and intricate Arabesque patterns draw the eye from the monumental to the minute. Even the colours carry meaning. Blue evokes the Arabian Gulf; white represents purity; yellow takes its inspiration from the desert sands. Together, they root an overwhelmingly grand interior in the natural landscape beyond the palace walls. Simply Abu Dhabi | 111
