O pening on Saadiyat Island in 2030, the new performing arts institution will add another compelling dimension toAbu Dhabi’s rapidly evolving cultural landscape. Its name translates simply as ‘House of theArts’, but the ambition behind it is considerably greater: a world-class home for performance in its many forms, bringing acclaimed international artists together with emerging regional talent, while inviting audiences to experience everything from opera and ballet to jazz, theatre, orchestral music, and experimental work. Even before the first curtain rises, however, the building itself will command attention. Dar al Funoon is among the final completed works designed by the late Frank Gehry, the visionary architect whose buildings have transformed city skylines around the world. Here, architecture and performance are deliberately intertwined. Gehry conceived the exterior as a living expression of music, enveloping the heart of the site in a billowing, fabric- like form that appears to cascade across the building.Atransparent façade, meanwhile, offers glimpses within, breaking down the conventional divide between performer, creative process, and public. That spirit of openness extends to what happens inside. Rather than a single monumental auditorium, Dar al Funoon has been conceived as an entire ecosystem for the performing arts, with spaces capable of accommodating experiences on dramatically different scales. At its centre will be a multipurpose performance hall seating more than 2,000 guests. Designed for opera, ballet, theatre, musicals, orchestral concerts, cultural events, and awards shows, it will feature world-class acoustics and an orchestra pit large enough for 120 musicians. Beyond it, a 3,500-seat outdoor amphitheatre will create a stage for major events and festivals beneath theAbu Dhabi sky. Simply Abu Dhabi | 123
