V ienna has always understood that elegance needn’t shout. At Anantara Palais Hansen Vienna, it reveals itself gradually: in the sweep of a historic staircase, the quiet of a courtyard, the ritual of afternoon tea, and the pleasure of returning from the Ringstrasse to a hotel that feels simultaneously grand and remarkably serene. The building itself has an impressive pedigree. Conceived by Baron Theophil Edvard von Hansen for the 1873 World’s Fair, the Neo-Re - naissance landmark spans eight interconnected structures, with Ionic columns, graceful arches, and four rooftop cupolas. A recent redesign preserves Hansen’s architectural signatures while introducing natural stone, rich woods, soft textiles, and warm contemporary interiors. There is no better introduction than THEO’s Tea Time. Set within the palace’s former carriage courtyard, now enclosed beneath glass, THEO’s Lounge & Bar brings an unexpected lightness to its historic surroundings. Its afternoon tea, created by EDVARD head chef Paul Gamauf and Executive Chef Dieter Stamminger, interprets Vienna’s celebrated coffeehouse culture through Michelin-starred eyes, pairing classic ritual with playful savoury and sweet creations.
