Elsewhere, setting becomes a means of mim- icking entirely different textures. Calibrated sapphires held by rails can suggest the edge of a carp’s lips; faceted metal beneath diamonds amplifies the impression of a crocodile’s scales. A galuchat-effect pavé of white dia - monds punctuated by sapphires conjures the icy, crystalline surface of a tiger ring. Gold itself becomes a palette, with different metals and finishes fused, polished, brushed, and chiselled to recreate the colours and surfaces found in nature. The result is not imitation so much as trans- formation into an extraordinary expression. The carp shimmers in icy blues and white, its elaborate construction turning the fluidity of an aquatic creature into a spectacular necklace. The crocodile coils around the wrist, its formidable body translated into articulated precious metal and diamonds. Cartier has long used sculpture and articulation together to reproduce the physicality of the crocodile, constructing sections individually so that the finished jewel moves with an almost organic suppleness. The two pieces make a dramatic finale to a portfolio already populated by mul - tiple interpretations of the Maison’s celebrated felines. There is history behind this fascination. Cartier’s animal jewels have attracted equally compelling personalities, among them Mexi- can actress María Félix, whose famous special orders included an articulated snake and a pair of extraordinary crocodiles. The Maison’s tête- à-tête animal bracelets also have deep roots, becoming fashionable in the early 20th century and later flourishing under Jeanne Toussaint, whose love of volume and naturalism helped shape Cartier’s enduring bestiary. More than ornament, these creatures carry attitude. They curl around the neck and wrist, confront one another, bare their teeth, or simply hold the gaze. Their preciousness may come from gold and exceptional gemstones, but their magnetism lies elsewhere: in Carti- er’s ability to persuade the eye that beneath all those diamonds, something wild is stirring.
