W hat if an artwork were not an object at all? What if it could not be framed, collected, or even separated from the space around it?What if its existence depended instead upon light and water, movement and sound—and upon you being there to experience it? These are some of the questions waiting inside teamLab PhenomenaAbu Dhabi, the extraordinary 17,000-square-metre art space in Saadiyat Cultural District. Created by Tokyo-based international art collective teamLab in partnership with the Department of Culture and Tourism –Abu Dhabi and Miral, it offers an encounter with art that feels less like entering a gallery than stepping across the threshold into another world. Here, familiar rules become unreliable. Light appears to possess weight. Darkness acquires form. Water creates patterns that shift with movement. Fleeting creatures emerge and disappear. Points of illumination communicate across space, while the presence of visitors alters what happens around them. Opened inApril 2025, teamLab Phenomena occupies a distinctive position within Saadiyat Cultural District. In a destination where architecture, archaeology, history, and artistic achievement are being brought together on an unprecedented scale, Phenomena introduces another perspective: one in which culture is not only something we inherit, preserve, or observe, but something we can physically enter and help to create. Beyond the object At the heart of teamLab Phenomena is an idea the collective calls Environmental Phenomena . It sounds complex. Experiencing it is considerably more intuitive. For centuries, our understanding of art has largely revolved around the object. Asculpture exists whether anyone is looking at it or not.Apainting remains a painting when the gallery closes for the night. Remove it from one room and place it in another and, while our perception of it may change, the physical artwork remains. At Phenomena, that certainty dissolves. The artworks here are created by their environments and cannot exist independently of them.Air, light, water, sound, space, and human movement become active components rather than background conditions. Change those conditions and the work changes with them. Remove the environment that sustains it and, in teamLab’s conception, the artwork itself ceases to exist. It is an idea that draws art intriguingly close to life. Astone can be sealed inside a box and remain a stone. Living things cannot exist in quite the same isolation. They depend upon systems around them —upon air and water, energy, other organisms, and an endlessly shifting network of relationships. teamLab invites us to consider whether art, too, might exist not as an autonomous thing, but as part of something larger. That philosophy transforms the experience of being here. Instead of asking simply What am I looking at? , we begin to ask What is happening around me? And what part am I playing in it? The art of being there Participation has long been part of contemporary art, of course, but at teamLab Phenomena it is woven into the fabric of the experience. Walk into one environment and the flow of what surrounds you may alter. Touch a surface and something might emerge. Disturb an illuminated form Simply Abu Dhabi | 95
